If you overtrain -- meaning you don't allow your body to recuperate adequately between training sessions -- your circulating testosterone levels can plunge by as much as 40 percent, according to a study at the University of North Carolina. The symptoms of overtraining are hard to miss: irritability, insomnia, muscle shrinkage, joining the Reform Party. To avoid overtraining, make sure you sleep a full eight hours at night, and never stress the same muscles with weight-lifting movements two days in a row.

The last, but certainly not the least, macronutrient to be concerned about is fat. You’ll want to get about 30% of your total calories from fat, but don’t overload on polyunsaturated fats like those found in salmon, other fatty fish and vegetable oils. Instead, concentrate on choosing monounsaturated fats found in nuts, olives, olive oil and avocados, and saturated fats from red meat and egg yolks. Unorthodox as this advice may be, research suggests that polyunsaturated fats lower testosterone levels, while monounsaturated and even saturated fats raise T levels.

“In general, all types of exercise stimulate the release and production of testosterone,” says sports medicine doctor Jordan Metzl, ., author of The Exercise Cure . “But there is data to suggest that lifting weights and high-intensity work might stimulate the greatest release of testosterone.” While research shows that those post-workout super-spikes may be temporary, the overall boosting benefit of regular exercise can’t be ignored. Pretty much any and all resistance work is worthy of a place in your T-tweaking program; on the other hand, long, slow cardio slogs, such as everlasting jogging sessions, may have a negative effect on testosterone levels.

All steroid hormones are derived from cholesterol. Contrary to popular belief, “steroid hormone” does not equate with “anabolic hormone”. Not only testosterone but estrogen and progesterone are steroid hormones derived from cholesterol. And most cholesterol in your body is produced by your liver, not from your diet. I know of no controlled studies showing that eating steaks increases testosterone levels. OTOH dietary cholesterol is no longer considered to be the great evil it used to be seen as, so go ahead and eat whole eggs if you like them. The theory that eating red meat makes you more of a man is promoted by people who just happen to like red meat. (There’s nothing wrong with liking red meat, just don’t pretend it has magical powers that it doesn’t have.)

If testosterone deficiency occurs during foetal development, then masculinisation of the foetus will fail to occur normally and this may give rise to disorders of sex development. If testosterone deficiency occurs during puberty, a boy’s growth may slow and no growth spurt will be seen. The child may also fail to develop full sexual characteristics (hypogonadism) associated with men undergoing puberty, including development of pubic hair, growth of the penis and testes and deepening of the voice. Around the time of puberty, boys with too little testosterone may also have less than normal strength and endurance, and their arms and legs may continue to grow out of proportion with the rest of their body.
