Obviously this woman's telling resonates with me. But do you know how many of my friends have told me stories of being initiated into sexual activity at 12 or so by adults. They take responsibility for it, believing they wanted it. I have a different perspective as my parents would shrug off responsibility by acting as though "Well YOU let them" or "Well YOU should have complained if that was happening if you didn't like it." I suppose when you are 12 and on the cusp of being a sexual being, that kind of bullshit gets incorporated into your own mind. It took me years to get to the point that I can stop being angry at myself for "letting" it happen. I can say that NO 5 year old is a willing participant, they are a victim BY DEFINTION. And in my opinion that goes for 8, 10, 12 years old as well. But that still does not prevent adults from shirking off any responsibility when you are a kid, or dismissing out of hand the stories once you become an adult. They ignore(d) what happened and want you to as well. I never talk about my experiences except in anonymous situations, but for whatever reason, many people share with me their stories, probably because I present a flat affect when they begin to hint at events from their childhood, and so they continue with the story. I can not act shocked, nor do I want to top them with my own stories. So I just listen. And it is, or it was, very common.

But she also appeared to signal that what is currently considered a fireable offense may have been more often overlooked during the Clinton era. At the same time , on November 16, Gillibrand tweeted about Franken: The allegations against Sen. Franken are deeply concerning. This kind of behavior is unacceptable and should not be tolerated anywhere in our society. There is nothing funny about it and there is no excuse for it. The Ethics Committee deserves answers from him. Gillibrand has not explained why she has shifted from supporting due process to calling for immediate beheading (surely accuser number seven’s non-kiss was not a smoking gun, was it? And if so, why?). Comparing Gillibrand’s takes on Clinton and Franken vividly illustrates the moral ambiguity and confusion that sexual issues provoke. And that is the very reason the country needs a patient, accepting, broad-spectrum, tolerant exploration of the issues. A retreat into Puritanism, banning, shunning, closing down the possibility that not every offense is a hanging offense – that is not what the country needs.

I tell them about my Grandfather who died when my father was only 3 because of blood poisoning from a gunshot wound to his arm during the first world war. I tell them how my uncle was killed during a bombing raid over Düsseldorf Germany and that no one from our family has yet to visit his burial site. I tell them about George W. Silk and George W. Silk who were killed by the same shell in the same trench during the battle of the Somme in 1916. I even read to my class the 95 year old hand written letter by which my great great grandmother was informed of the death of both her husband and eldest son.
